Thanksgiving started in the 17th century with the arrival of the first English settlers to the New Land of America. After a long and severe winter, for which they were completely unprepared and during which many people died of hunger, help came from an indigenous tribe of Wampanoag, who taught the colonists to hunt and cultivate the land. In the autumn of 1621, the harvest was good and the colonists and Native Americans celebrated together for three days. This is considered to have been the first Thanksgiving celebration.

For many years, the holiday was not an official annual event, but instead it was decided every year by the President himself whether the celebrations would take place. Finally, in October 1863, Abraham Lincoln issued the „Thanksgiving Proclamation”, officially making the last Thursday of November the date for Thanksgiving every year. Interestingly, in 1939, President Roosevelt moved the date to 23rd November as a way to extend the Christmas shopping season and boost economic growth. It wasn’t until 1941 that the Congress passed the law which now makes everyone sit at Thanksgiving dinner tables on the fourth Thursday of November each year.
